SWEAT OF MY VOLS

When I was onsite in Athens, TN in the fall of 1998 all I heard about was how great UT is and how crappy K State is in football. How we play a bunch of creampuffs and have never beaten anybody. How the sec is God's gift to football and all other conferences live in fear of playing sec teams. Then  we lost to aTm for the Big 12 Championship, finished #3 in the BCS yet were snubbed to the #4 bowl of the conference. I had no less than three self-proclaimed UT fans call me and remind me of the fact and rub it in. Then when they won the national title I told them it was a cheap victory against the team's third string qb.

Payback's a you know what. They met us on 1/1/01 in the Cotton Bowl Classic and we trounced them in royal fashion. The final score: 35-21 but by the comments you will read the game was not that close. Being there in person the game was not that close. Bill Snyder took out the first string in the third quarter. He is truly a class act. Otherwise I have no doubt we would have handed them a defeat similar to Nebraska's 61-17 complete humiliation of the co Big 10 (with 11 teams) champion Northwestern.

Well I emailed one of the guys down there in Athens and asked him how he liked having a mudhole stomped into his team and walked dry by a team he said is at best a second tier program that no one cares about.

All he could do is make excuses like "when you goto a bcs bowl every year [ a lie...ut did not qualify for a bcs bowl in 2000 season] you don't get motivated for the cotton bowl,...we would have rather just stayed home than waste our time....we contend for a national title every year [lie...contend is a stretch]" blah blah blah. In the coaches own words they were very happy to get to such a good bowl. In the words of their outland trophy winner the team was motivated after a 2-3 start to get to a new year's day bowl. 2% fans, the Aggies would say!

UT's season was only 8-3 in an over-rated and under-achieving conference (alabama was preseason #3 and finished 3-8 among other things) whose top 3 teams went 0-3 in bowls and finished with only one team in the top 10...simply because the media is in love with florida.

The florida team that beat UT once again this season (what is ut....1-10 in the last decade?) struggled against the same ball state team my g said is the worst team he's ever seen K State play. We beat the same ball state team 76-0, took out the starters before the first half and did not run a single pass play in the second half. EVERYONE eligible to play on the roster played in that game. I think they even called out a few fans from the stands. We've beaten Nebraska, a 3 time national champion in the 90s, twice in three years! They have the same number of titles in the 90s as the entire sec. When was the last time UT beat Florida two times in three years?

K State finished with three losses. Two of them to the National Champion. This amidst a mid to lower teens preseason ranking. Year after year we finish ahead of the expectations of the pollsters.

NOTE TO THE MEDIA: University of Oklahoma has SEVEN national titles and THREE Heisman trophy winners. That's more titles than the STATE OF FLORIDA COMBINED and a TIE for Heisman winners. And I think they did a fair enough job showing how well wenke operates against a quality opponent. The commentators were so surprised that OU could come out and play. Come on...A 13 point underdog?

What follows is an assembly of the media's thoughts on the game. The same media that hates the Big 12 north. The same media that says year in and year out that we don't play anyone worth mentioning. The same media that hates to admit 3 Big 12 teams finished in the top 10, have the national championship and could have had the heisman if one of the top candidates hadn't played in florida.

"And no one, of course, spanks the Vols like the Big 12"  as quoted by TN columnist MARK WIEDMER

And a smattering of what the sports media and others in general were saying about the vols
